AILA NE Wants to Support the Whole You, and here’s why…

In our post-pandemic remote and hybrid workplaces, many of us feel isolated and alone. This is especially true as we navigate challenging immigration adjudications, judicial decisions, politically divided communities, clients, colleagues, and election anxiety. The immigration legal industry is increasingly experiencing what researchers call a “slow burn” due to daily stresses that snowball into burnout, insomnia, depression, gambling addiction, substance abuse, and other stress-related illnesses. Research shows that about 15% of lawyers will experience clinical depression at some point in their careers.

Furthermore, the US Surgeon General, Dr. Vivek Murthy, warns that loneliness and isolation are now the number one health epidemic in our country. All this underscores that AILA NE recognizes the well-being of our chapter members as crucial—not only to being a successful lawyer but also to being a supportive colleague, friend, parent, partner, sibling, etc. What Does This Mean? AILA-NE Well-Being Committee is here to support the “Whole You.” Here’s our committee and what this committee will do:

  • Promote Comprehensive Lawyer Well-Being: Focus on physical, mental, emotional, and professional health, including stress management strategies tailored to the unique challenges of the immigration legal profession, particularly during election seasons and political changes.
  • Cultivate Strong Relationships: Build connections within our membership and with external organizations and government stakeholders to foster support, connectedness, and resilience.
  • Enhance Professional Development: Provide programs and resources to strengthen legal practice, improve work-life balance, and promote ethical and inclusive practices.
  • Foster a Supportive Community: Create opportunities for social interaction, networking, and mutual support among chapter members to build a strong sense of belonging.

  • Set Small, Achievable Goals: Start with simple tasks to rebuild momentum. Breaking down larger projects into manageable steps can help ease the transition back into a productive routine.
  • Create a Routine: Establishing a consistent daily routine can help you regain focus. Include regular breaks and set specific times for work, exercise, and relaxation to maintain balance.
  • Stay Connected: Reconnect with colleagues and peers to foster a sense of community and shared purpose. Alleviate feelings of isolation and stay motivated and engaged.
