The AILA NE DEI Committee invites you to chat about the impact of war on our practice and ourselves.

As immigration attorneys, we often work at the intersection of conflict, displacement, and human dignity. War shapes not only the lives of our clients, but also impacts our own identities, values and relationships with those around us.

This is a timely discussion for us as a profession, since war and identity have become central to the government’s drive in enforcing more restrictive entry to the United States. This conversation will explore how war and political conflict influences our own identities and belonging, as well as advocacy in our legal practice.

Topics for discussion may include:

Reflecting on how global conflicts shape our own perspectives, relationships, and professional responsibilities.
The role of identity, nationality, religion, and ethnicity in immigration work
Working with clients fleeing war, persecution, and political instability
How do histories of violence, displacement, and persecution that shape the stories of our clients, affect us?
How do we navigate cultural understanding, trauma, and ethical responsibility while advocating for those seeking protection and stability?
Navigating cultural sensitivity and value judgments in advocacy
The lawyer’s role in preserving dignity, voice, and human rights
